The LANDSAT programme began as an experimental digital earth observation programme in 1972. It was so successful that NASA decided to archive all the images very early. On the contrary, an equivalent anterior Russian programme did not archive systematically its data. Soon, the U.S. authorities decided to develop LANDSAT as an operational programme under the common supervision of the U.S. geological service and NASA. Currently, LANDSAT is fully active and shows a large flexibility in data use and reuse.
